Kirkcudbright Galleries in the Town Hall

Kirdkcudbright (pronounced “kir-coo-bree”) – on the banks of the Dee Estuary – is a lovely little town to wander around, and a visit to the Kirkcudbright Galleries in the beautiful Town Hall building is highly recommended.

After all Kirkcudbright proudly calls itself “The Artists’ Town”!

A History of Art

The Town Hall itself, a beautiful B-listed building completed in 1879, has a rich history. We’ll take a better photo of it next time we’re there!

Before becoming the home of the galleries, it previously housed a library and museum. Now, it showcases works by the “Kirkcudbright Artists.” This group of renowned painters were drawn (no pun intended!) to the town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, because of its picturesque landscapes and inspiring atmosphere.

The collection is of national importance, and also includes paintings, drawings, and other works by famous artists such as John Faed, E A Hornel, and Jessie M King. In addition to the permanent collection, the Town Hall also hosts temporary exhibitions.

Exploring the Galleries

The building is quite spacious, and so there’s plenty to see and do inside. You’ll find bright, open spaces, as well as several different areas to explore, including displays of local art and history. There’s also a pleasant cafe to take a break in.

Temporary Exhibitions

During our visit, the top floor featured an exhibition by Andy Goldsworthy. It was really interesting, with a good display of his art as well as information about each piece.

This area is likely used for changing exhibitions, so there’ll be something new to see the next time we visit.

More Galleries to Discover

We also plan to visit the Tolbooth Art Centre and the Harbour Cottage Gallery in the town on future trips.

You might even spot artists at work in their own studios around Kirkcudbright!
