Places to Visit in Gatehouse of Fleet

Gatehouse of Fleet is a lovely little village with only a handful of shops, but some definite points of interest and well worth a visit.

The picturesque main street has retained its old fashioned charm, with an assortment of small, mostly independent shops and cafés.

Discover Dalbeattie – the Granite Town

Dalbeattie is known as the “Granite Town” of Dumfries & Galloway / South West Scotland primarily because of its rich granite quarrying history. The name is believed to be from Irish Gaelic; Dail Bheithe.

Wanlockhead Inn, Scotland’s Highest Pub

After we’d visited Crawick Multiverse, we made the short(ish) journey to Wanlockhead Inn, Scotland’s Highest pub (1531ft / 467m above sea level)! It’s about 10 miles (20 mins) from Crawick Multiverse.

It’s actually a top 6 list at the moment! The Crab Pot opened, then closed again! Also one or two of our other favourite places have closed in the last few months, so we’ll be using it as an excuse to eat out at a few more nearby 😋

The Beagle Country Pub

The Beagle closed in January 2025, then reopened in March 2025 as The Crab Pot!

Sadly that didn’t last but plans are now taking shape to turn the venue into a ‘Wellbeing Centre‘, and the courtyard is now being used as an area the cafe / bar and pop-ups.

The Beagle Country Pub on site Bar & Restaurant is was run by Barend Holiday Lodges. A large canopy and heaters in the courtyard make outdoor dining even more enjoyable.

Kippford – the Solway Riviera

Kippford is a picturesque little village that has also been called the “Solway Riviera”. It benefits from the Gulf Stream and is popular for sailing, with many small yachts moored in the tidal estuary of the River Urr.

Kirkcudbright ‘the Artist Town’

Pronounced “kir-coo-bree“

Kirkcudbright has colourful houses, independent shops, a marina, a harbour and castle ruins overlooking the town. It’s a renowned artist town with art galleries to peruse. It’s also a classic harbour town famous for its scallop and lobster fishing.
