Scotland’s weather is part of the deal. On the Solway Coast that usually means a shower rather than a washout, but it’s worth knowing what’s within easy reach when the weather turns. The good news is that some of our favourite days out near Serenity 22 have been on grey days – the galleries in Kirkcudbright are better without a crowd, Wigtown is quieter midweek, and a private sauna session feels even better when it’s raining outside.
Most of what’s below is within 40 minutes. None of it requires booking far in advance. And the pool and sauna are a 4-minute walk.

Start at the Lodge – Pool and Sauna
If you’re seeing a wet day ahead, why not book your sauna session or pool slot! Both are free for Serenity 22 guests and a 4-minute walk from the lodge door.
The wood-fired sauna runs 55-minute private sessions – book via the link in your confirmation email or call Barend reception. The heated indoor pool is also private.

Kirkcudbright – The Artists’ Town
24 miles WSW, ~40 min drive from Serenity 22 – DG6 4HZ
40 minutes drive west, Kirkcudbright is a satisfying rainy day town within easy reach. It’s small enough to cover on foot, has real character, and the galleries are worth the drive regardless of the weather.
Kirkcudbright Galleries in the Town Hall – the permanent collection of Kirkcudbright Artists is of national importance, and temporary exhibitions change regularly. We visited during an Andy Goldsworthy exhibition. There’s a café inside and the building itself – a B-listed Victorian Town Hall – is worth seeing.
Kirkcudbright Dark Space Planetarium – recommended by our guests and by us. Good for families and anyone with an interest in astronomy. The planetarium show is the highlight.
The town is also good for independent cafés and shops. The harbour is worth a short walk (even in light rain).
Wigtown – Scotland’s Book Town
Just over an hour’s drive west, Wigtown is Scotland’s National Book Town – a small town with a disproportionately high number of independent bookshops, including the famous “The Bookshop” which has its own webcam, shop cat, and a reputation that extends well beyond Scotland. It’s a genuine destination for anyone who likes browsing without pressure, and the town itself has a quiet charm that works particularly well on a wet day. We’ve been twice. Read our Wigtown guide →

Castle Douglas – A Town Worth Wandering
20 minutes from the lodge, Castle Douglas is Scotland’s Food Town. King Street has a good mix of independent shops, delis and cafés that make it easy to spend a couple of hours without really trying. We’ve been many times.
King Street is the main road with many cafés to choose from. Designs Gallery & Café (downstairs café, conservatory seating, reliable food) and Street Lights (varied menu and delicious cakes) are 2 we heartily recommend. Read our Castle Douglas guide →

Loch Arthur Farm Shop & Café
20 minutes from the lodge, Loch Arthur farm shop and café offer organic produce, a cheese counter, and a really good café. We’ve stopped here on arrival and departure days (and in between 😋). The café is open 9:30am-3:30pm, every day, but closed on Sundays. Read more about Loch Arthur →

Threave House & Garden, Castle Douglas
A National Trust for Scotland property ~25 minutes from the lodge with a walled garden, estate walks, and a visitor centre. The garden is worth seeing in any season, and if the house is open it’s a good day even in poor weather. Read about our visits to the house → and gardens →.

John Paul Jones Cottage Museum
A short drive south towards Kirkbean, the birthplace of John Paul Jones – founding father of the United States Navy – is an interesting small museum. Niche, but well done and a good hour out on a quiet day. Read more →

The Devil’s Porridge Museum
At Eastriggs near Gretna – about 45 minutes east – this tells the story of the munitions workers of HM Factory Gretna during the First World War. We haven’t been through the exhibition yet (only the café) but it’s on our list, and it has consistently good reviews. Worth the drive for a half-day out. The Devil’s Porridge Museum →

Dumfries Museum & Camera Obscura
We haven’t been yet but plan to. The Camera Obscura dates from 1836 and is one of the oldest in the world. Dumfries is 30 minutes from the lodge and worth a half-day in any weather – Burns House on Burns Street is a ~10 min walk from the museum.

Robert Burns in Dumfries & Galloway
Dumfries was where “Rabbie Burns” spent the last years of his life. Burns House on Burns Street, his final resting place at St Michael’s Churchyard, Ellisland Farm, and The Globe Inn (where you can sit in his favourite booth) are all within 30-40 minutes of the lodge.
