Designs Gallery & Cafe in King Street, Castle Douglas – established for over 25 years – serves coffees, cakes and lunches (see a picture of the menu below).
We’d been in shop before but didn’t notice the entrance to the café (it’s to the right of the steps in the middle of the shop)!
Go down the stairs through some doors to the ‘basement’ and then the café counter is on your left. Tables then extend on your right all the way to the back of the building. At the end of the room, through some double doors, there’s also a light and airy (but still warm in colder weather) conservatory that leads out into the garden.
Quite a large group of us were there for lunch. The staff were happy for us to move a couple of tables together, then were attentive and accommodating while waiting on the table.
Service was prompt and friendly, and there was also a good selection on the menu with specials on the board. Carrot & Orange soup was was a new enjoyable flavour combination for us!
Two of our meals were a Sicilian Toasted Bread and Eggs Florentine (pictured).
We all really enjoyed our food and drinks. It felt slightly expensive, but prices have risen everywhere recently! The quality of the surroundings made up for this. The cafe, tables and art on the wall all made for a good ambience, although we felt that maybe the menus could be made to look more in keeping with the quality of the food on offer. We recommend a visit so if you’re near Castle Douglas sometime why not drop in!
