Kippford – the Solway Riviera

Kippford Beach & Estuary

Kippford is a picturesque little village that has also been called the “Solway Riviera”. It benefits from the Gulf Stream and is popular for sailing, with many small yachts moored in the tidal estuary of the River Urr.

It’s a small and very narrow village with one main road that runs alongside the estuary, but there’s an ice cream shop and a couple of hotels and pubs and cafes.

When the tide is out it’s possible to cross the sand to Rough Island in the estuary. Read about when we walked to Rough Island here. If you’d like to walk to the island (walkers are discouraged during the busiest time for nesting birds from 1st March until 31st July) check when to avoid crossing as the causeway is underwater for 5 (five) hours during high tide.

Kippford is linked to Rockliffe by the Jubilee Path, a 1.25 mile (2 km) track. From the path you can also access Mark hill and the Mote of Mark, a 5th-century hill fort.

On a clear day you can see the Cumbrian coast across the Solway Firth to the South.

The coastal path walk from Barend to Kippford is just over 6 miles (10 km). See our Barend/Sandyhills to Rockcliffe walk here.
