Arbigland is an historic house with unusual and secluded gardens leading on to a quiet beach with stunning views across to Cumbria.
Described as ‘nearly lost’, these 18th Century gardens are being restored on an ongoing basis. It’s hoped that the ‘work in progress’ feel of the estate adds to the interest. There’s a mixture of formal gardens and woodland and we thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon there.

A paper map was available to pick up next to the honesty box. We walked round in a mostly circular route to make sure that we had seen each part.
However, you could easily just meander through the many and varied pathways and see where you end up. I imagine this would be equally pleasant.
We enjoyed the many carvings, statues, unusual trees and other points of interest such as the Pavilion built by Italian Prisoners of War. There was also a wild flower maze (only calf high when we went, but still fun).
The broad walk brings you onto the beach with views right across to the lake district fells and there are plenty of places for picnics either on the beach or in the gardens. There were toilets but no cafe or shop. The house itself wasn’t open when we visited; you need to book a tour in advance by phoning ahead, or ask at the nearby John Paul Jones Museum.

Overall an interesting and relaxing afternoon spent exploring and taking photographs. It would be fascinating to visit again in another year or two, perhaps tour the house and see what has changed in the gardens.
