How to Recycle in Dumfries & Galloway

While you’re staying at Serenity 22 Barend, we would very much appreciate you separating your waste into the 3 bins and 1 box outside the lodge so that it can be recycled.

Please rinse plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, food tins, drinks cans and cartons. Only clean items can be recycled and this is also so that insects and vermin aren’t attracted to the bins.

Please squash plastic bottles and drinks cartons – this helps to save space in the bin. You can also recycle the lids and tops.

Card and cardboard

✅ Toilet and kitchen roll tubes
✅ Cardboard egg boxes

Remove packing tape from cardboard boxes and plastic covers from magazines before recycling them please. However, you don’t need to remove any staples.

❌ Padded envelopes (e.g. jiffy bags)
❌ Kitchen towels
❌ Wet paper or cardboard
❌ Wallpaper
❌ Paper or cardboard contaminated with food – for example, takeaway pizza boxes
❌ Disposable drinks cups or straws
❌ Hardback books (or donate to charity if possible)
❌ Sweet bags or papers


Black Box for Glass

A trial of collecting clean, rinsed glass in 2 containers on the site has recently been initiated (Feb 2023).

We would very much appreciate it if you could…

  1. please rinse and collect all glass bottles/jars/glass containers in the black box outside the lodge and then
  2. deposit them in the nearest glass collection container opposite Lodge No 11 (there’s another opposite lodges 51/52) before your departure.
  3. Please return the empty black box to outside the lodge.

Please take care to avoid depositing during unsociable hours and thank you for your help and for being considerate ?

✅ Toiletry and perfume glass bottles

Please rinse glass bottles and jars before placing them in the box, so that insects and vermin aren’t attracted to the bins. This also benefits the recycling process.

Plastic and metal lids can be recycled in the red labelled bin.
