Distance from the lodge: 21 miles W ~30 min drive
On a previous visit to the area, we travelled to The Old School House Café/Restaurant (on the A75 a few miles SW of Castle Douglas), only to find that they were closed for holidays. This time we checked they were open and eagerly awaited our lunch.
We arrived around 1:30pm on a Friday. We’d just managed to get in before they closed at 2pm for a few days staff holiday over the weekend, so were relieved!
It was much larger and spacious than we thought. We were a little concerned that it might be ‘too nice’ for us with all the family in tow ?, but we were quickly put at ease.
A friendly gentleman showed us to a free table, everything on the menu – plus specials on the boards – was very tempting!
I had Sweet Chilli Veg with rice, which was very nice with the right amount of ‘kick’, but a little too much sauce. Other than that, we really enjoyed everything; there were 8s, 9s (and even a 10 for chocolate cake ?) across the board!
Lunch for 5, with drinks and desserts, came to £67.
The Old School House gets great reviews, and we can see why. It’s light and airy, and has a very genial atmosphere, with staff who are friendly and attentive. There are interesting quotes and memorabilia around the fireplace from when it was a school house, which also adds to the ambience and experience.
They specialise in local Fresh Produce and make their own bread, cakes, desserts, traybakes, jam, cranberry sauce, and much more. We were spoiled for choice with the menu so will definitely be going back for more treats!
