Nikos Mediterranean Restaurant & Cafe Review

13 miles WNW ~20 min drive DG7 1DX

June 2024: Nikos’ has changed to The Olive Retreat. It’s still a great place to eat!

Nikos’ is a relaxed, family friendly Mediterranean Restaurant & Cafe in the centre of Castle Douglas.

The head chef, Nikos, is Greek and specialises in traditional and creative Mediterranean cuisine, combining specially imported Greek ingredients and locally sourced Scottish fresh produce.

About Our Visit

We went for a midweek lunch. We arrived around 12:30 and, although there was a steady stream of diners, the tables are well spaced out and it didn’t feel crowded.

Our waitress was helpful and friendly. We weren’t sure what to have so she suggested we try a few dishes of the Mezze menu.

Translated literally, the word mezze (meh-ZEH) means a taste or a bite. So choose your own dishes to get a taste of the Mediterranean!

This menu is comprised of lots of small dishes and the idea is that you order several and try a variety of foods. The menu gives you a guide as to how many to order, but we ordered less than suggested as we only wanted a light lunch. We tried about 6 different Mezze dishes between us and shared everything. We were there as a couple, but this would work equally well in a group and it’s a good way to try lots of different dishes. Everything was very tasty and we tried a few things we hadn’t had before.

Would We Recommend?

We’d recommend the Mezze menu for the social experience and to try multiple dishes, but if you don’t fancy the idea of it, you can order from the normal lunch menu between 12 and 2 or from the pizza menu instead. We were child free when we visited but the Kids’ menu looked good.

The menus have good variety for lunch or dinner, also there’s a Drinks menu with cocktails, wines, beers and spirits. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, and gluten and dairy free diets are also well catered for. They also have a takeaway menu.

The restaurant is light and airy, it’s on a corner along the main street in Castle Douglas (King Street), so there are windows on two sides. There’s a nice relaxed atmosphere and all the staff were pleasant.

We’re also happy to report that the restaurant – and the toilets – were spotless. They have a deli gift shop with products displayed on large shelves on a wall of the restaurant, which was interesting to look at, and tempting to purchase from!

We’ll definitely be going again; we recommend a visit and are sure you’ll enjoy it!
