Serenity has a great view of Barend Loch, so we really appreciate all efforts made to keep the Loch healthy and looking good! The lodges at Barend use a treatment plant over the road for waste water. The plant uses Barend Loch as a final stage of water purification before discharging via a stream into the sea. There’s no smell and the outflow from the loch is regularly tested showing a very high standard of purity.
Here are three ways you can help us to look after Barend Loch:
1 – Please don’t use products containing phosphates
Weeds may be visible in the loch in the spring and summer months. They’re encouraged by phosphates from household and cleaning products entering the drainage system from the lodges. Phosphates stimulate plant and algal growth, and remain in the loch sediment at the end of the summer.
They weeds aren’t unsightly, but the more there are, the less welcoming the loch is for wildlife. For this reason Barend is a PHOSPHATE FREE ZONE.
Please don’t bring any products containing phosphates or buy any while you’re here!
No products containing phosphates are used when the lodges are serviced. Phosphate-free soaps and dishwasher tablets are provided for you to use. If you run out of anything, please ask at Barend Holiday Lodges Reception.
2 – Please don’t use products containing chlorine bleach
Chlorine kills off the good bacteria which help break down waste early in the process. No products containing chlorine bleach are used when the lodges are serviced, and we ask you not to use any during your stay.
3 – Please don’t flush anything other than toilet paper
The system can’t cope with baby wipes (even those that claim to be ‘flushable’), nappies, nappy liners, cloths, sanitary towels, cotton buds etc. They clog the pumps and can cause a very unpleasant overflow! So, please don’t put anything ‘extra’ into the toilet except loo paper. A waste bin is provided in each bathroom for your convenience.
