Ernespie House is a traditional hotel that’s open for meals and afternoon teas for non-residents.
Getting There
We followed our sat nav and drove through the Haugh of Urr, turning off Old Military Rd, and wondered if we were on the right track, as we seemed to come to the rear of the hotel. However, when leaving we went via the main entrance which is off the A745.

The Dining Experience
We sat in the oak panelled dining area and were glad of the warmth from the log burner. It was a quiet evening with just a handful of other diners so we only saw two members of staff. They were very friendly and our drinks and food orders arrived quickly.
We had the halloumi burger and Mussaman curry and both were generous portions, tasty and good value for money. We started eating quickly and forgot to take photos 🤦🏻♂️😆. However, I’m writing this a couple of weeks later and still remember the Mussaman curry and perfectly cooked rice 👌🏻😋.
Ambience
My only criticism was the music. They played modern country which was unedited with occasional swearing 🤬😬 This felt incongruous to the traditional atmosphere. I would choose piano, classical or jazz to match the style of the property 🤷🏻♂️ However, overall we enjoyed the food and would be happy to eat here again.
We were here for an evening meal so didn’t really get to appreciate the property and grounds in the light. So, we plan to go back and try the afternoon tea and enjoy the surroundings next time.
