Scotland for Overseas Visitors – Self-Catering on the Solway Coast

Experience the Scotland That Most Visitors Never See

Many visitors to Scotland head straight for the Highlands – Loch Ness, Glencoe, Skye and more. We’ve visited those, and they’re definitely worth seeing, but most of the year they’re very busy, some parts have clouds of midges during midge season Midge Season: late May to early September, with peak swarms in July and August, and the drives are long.

Dumfries and Galloway is in the southwest of Scotland, a couple of hours from Glasgow or Edinburgh. It has the same rugged coastline and ancient castles, the same loch views, the same pristine forests and dark skies – without the tour bus traffic. Serenity 22 Barend is a Scandinavian timber lodge near the Solway Coast, and it makes a practical, unhurried base for exploring a part of Scotland that most overseas visitors never reach.

Cross the border at Gretna and you’re less than an hour from the lodge – Scotland without the full Highland drive.

The Scottish Experience

Unlike some Highland itineraries where you’ll spend hours each day driving between attractions, most of the places we recommend are within a 45 min drive from the lodge. More time exploring and less time sitting in the car! Scotland isn’t just about the scenery. Here are some of the places to visit that we think make this corner of the country special…

Robert Burns: Scotland’s national poet “Rabbie Burns” (who wrote Auld Lang Syne) was born in Alloway (1 hr 30 min) and spent the last years of his life in Dumfries, 30 minutes from the lodge. Burns House on Burns Street is where he lived and died. Today it’s a small museum that we visited recently, and his final resting place is 10 mins walk from there.

The historic Ellisland Farm, where he wrote some of his best-known works, is just over 10 minutes drive from Dumfries. You can even enjoy a pint at his favorite booth in The Globe Inn – one of the oldest working taverns in Scotland. Alloway has the larger Burns Monument and museum – these are on our ‘to-do’ list!

Castles: Caerlaverock Castle is 45 minutes away – a moated, triangular castle that has been a ruin since the 17th century. Sweetheart Abbey, 20 minutes from the lodge, is the remains of a 13th-century Cistercian abbey. Drumlanrig Castle (55 minutes) is still a working ducal estate and has appeared as a filming location several times, including in Outlander. There are several Outlander filming locations across Scotland with some others specifically in Dumfries & Galloway.

Whisky: Galloway Distillery (1 hour from Serenity 22) is co-owned by Outlander actor Sam Heughan, and produces whisky, gin, and vodka. Bladnoch Distillery (1 hour 10 minutes west) is near to Galloway distillery; it’s Scotland’s most southerly, and the oldest privately owned Scotch whisky distillery in operation (est. 1817). Annandale distillery (55 minutes) is the nearest to the lodge.

Dark Skies: The Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park is the UK’s first Dark Sky Park and one of the darkest sites in Europe. It’s around 50 minutes from the lodge. The annual Dark Sky Festival runs in October – worth planning around for visits in fall.

Wildlife: You’ll definitely see some rabbits while you’re relaxing on the balcony! The RSPB Mersehead reserve is 10 minutes from the lodge, where we’ve seen a barn owl, barnacle geese, and many other birds. Red squirrels, badgers and foxes are seen in the area, and Bainloch Deer Park next to Barend has hundreds of red deer (Britain’s largest land mammal), sika and roe deer. Also spotted are Red Kites, Peregrine Falcons, and (more elusive) Pine Martens.

Mountain biking: The 7stanes mountain biking trails at Dalbeattie are around 10 minutes away and attract riders from across the UK and Europe.

Day Trips

The lodge is well placed for day trips to both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Glasgow (2 hours): The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is free, vast, and well worth half a day. The Burrell Collection reopened in 2022 after a major renovation – one of the UK’s great art collections, also free (pay for parking). The Mackintosh Tearooms – designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a Scottish architect, designer, and artist – are worth a visit if, like us, you like the ‘Glasgow Style‘.

Edinburgh (2 hours 20 min): The Old Town, Edinburgh Castle, and the Royal Mile are manageable in a day. Consider visiting midweek if possible. The National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street is free and a good rainy day option.

View of Edinburgh Castle on its volcanic cliff, framed by old stone townhouses, a vintage street lamp, and the Vennel steps.

Galloway Forest Park (50 min): The largest forest park in the UK. Raiders Road Forest Drive is open to the public and a good option for families, or anyone who wants the landscape without a long hike.

The Lake District (2 hours): If you want to combine your Scottish stay with a Lake District visit, it’s 2 hours south – an easy addition to a longer UK trip. It’s beautiful, but can be crowded. We’ve enjoyed walks near Lake Windermere, Wast Water (Scafell Pike) and Catbells, Keswick.

Getting Here

By air: Glasgow International Airport is the closest major airport – about 2 hours by car. Edinburgh Airport is around 2 hours 20 minutes. Manchester Airport is approximately 3 hours south via the M6 – a reasonable option if you’re combining a Scottish stay with time in England. Newcastle-Upon-Tyne also has an international airport and is around 2 hours 20 minutes drive. They all have rental car desks at the airport.

By train: London Euston to Carlisle by train is an option (varies from 3.5 – 7 hours depending on the service). Dumfries is under an hour from Carlisle. The lodge is then 1 hour 15 minutes by bus, or 30 minutes by taxi (£30 – £40) from Dumfries Railway Station.

Driving in the UK: Traffic in this part of Scotland is light; that’s one of the reasons I like it – driving is much more enjoyable again! The roads between Dumfries and the Solway Coast are quiet and straightforward. The main things to know:

Driving on the Left: What to Expect
  • In the UK, traffic drives on the left. If you’re renting a car, automatic transmission is widely available and worth requesting if you’re not used to driving a manual (stick shift) on the opposite side.
  • Roundabouts (traffic circles) operate by giving way to traffic already on the roundabout – coming from your right.
  • Speed limits are in miles per hour: 20 or 30mph in towns, 60mph on most rural roads, and 70mph on motorways.
  • Fuel (gas/diesel) is sold by the liter.
  • Where there are single-track roads, pull into passing places to your left to let oncoming traffic through.

Planning a Longer UK Trip?

Serenity 22 sits between the Lake District and Edinburgh on a north-south route. A typical longer UK itinerary might take in London, the Cotswolds, York, the Lake District, then D&G before heading up to Edinburgh and the Highlands. Dumfries and Galloway is quieter and less visited than both – a natural contrast to the crowds of the Lakes and the coach-tour Highlands.
