We visited Caerlaverock Castle many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. We’ve visited many castles in the UK, but this one stuck in our memory, with it’s distinctive shape, moat and contrasting building style inside the castle walls.
For some reason I also remembered that they had an informational video starring Tony Robinson!
In recent years there hasn’t been any visitor access to the castle during ‘high level masonry inspections’, so we were keeping an eye on the website for the first chance to go when the castle was open again.
Although part of the castle has scaffolding and is sectioned off, most of it was accessible during our visit in June 2024.
Engaging with History (with a Tech Twist)
The castle itself is impressive, but our exploration was also enhanced by the Castle Quest app. This optional app (available for iOS and Android) uses Augmented Reality (AR) to keep young ones (and the young at heart) engaged with virtual characters – from the resident cook to a monk from the nearby abbey – who tell a story of preparing the castle for the return of its Lord.
The characters bring stories of the castle’s inhabitants to life. We learned about daily routines, and there’s a lighthearted quest to identify a potential traitor. It was a fun way to learn, particularly for me and our youngest son who enjoyed collecting the virtual flag pieces.
A Castle Steeped in History
However, the app doesn’t detract from the experience for others, as the AR info points are unobtrusive. In between those virtual encounters, we explored the impressive stonework, climbed for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, and read about the castle’s turbulent history through informative displays. The Tony Robinson video is still there! It’s in a separate building which has more information and artefacts, next to the ticket office and shop.
The app also led me to a place I didn’t know was there before, the first Caerlaverock Castle, which is about 200m from the main one! There’s only an outline of it’s walls now, but it’s interesting to see where it was built, and why.
A Day Trip Worth Repeating
Our day trip to Caerlaverock was a resounding success, we’re glad we went back, and would definitely go again. The combination of history, stunning views, and the optional Castle Quest app made it a memorable experience. Whether you’re a history buff or simply enjoy exploring historical landmarks, Caerlaverock Castle deserves a place on your itinerary.

There are toilet facilities (including adapted), tea room, shop etc. The shop seemed expensive, although there were also some ‘normally’ priced items!
