Lunch at Abbey Cottage Tearoom by Sweetheart Abbey

12 miles NE ~20 min drive DG2 8BY

These small but pleasant tea rooms are right next to the Abbey ruins but are run independently and open at times when the Abbey is closed. There’s indoor and outdoor seating and also a small gift shop too.

We stopped here for lunch after climbing Criffel. It was a midweek lunch time and so fairly quiet. The quick service from the friendly staff, as well as good food, made for an enjoyable lunch.

The lunches we tried were: home made soup of the day (courgette and carrot), which was particularly delicious and served with very tasty seeded bread, and also a vegetarian haggis panini. We had a freshly made lime and coconut scone afterwards which had good flavour but could have done with a better rise.

Although we didn’t sample any unusual blends ourselves there was a very good selection of different teas and the tea rooms have won the Tea Guild Award of Excellence several times!

Overall a pleasant tea rooms and gift shop with friendly service and tasty food.
