An intriguing name, we’ve driven past this museum a few times and had to look up what it was!

This state of the art, award-winning, 5 star-rated museum tells the story of HM Factory Gretna, the United Kingdom’s largest munitions factory in World War I, where there were 30,000 workers: 12,000 of them women.

Booking in advance is recommended during the summer and school holidays.

Stargazing in Galloway’s Dark Skies

22 Barend

Galloway Forest Park – not far from Serenity 22 Barend – was designated the first Dark Sky Park in the UK by the International Dark-Sky Association. In 2009 it was only the fourth in the world; there are now over 100 worldwide. It’s a Gold Tier park for its dark skies which make for breathtaking and rare stargazing conditions.

A Dark Sky Park is a place with exceptionally dark night skies, where there’s a commitment to control light pollution.

Very few people live within the boundaries of Galloway Forest Park, so there’s very little light pollution and the nights are extra clear.

The region covers 300 square miles that are protected from light pollution. Thousands more stars are visible compared to a typical town or city.

You can see over 7,000 stars and planets with the naked eye, including the Milky Way stretching across the sky. There’s a new show every night as we travel round the sun and get a constantly changing view of the stars.

Craigieknowes is just 3 miles from Kippford, alongside a stretch of beautiful coastline known as the Scottish Riviera. It has a challenging 9 hole par 3 course along with a “Tee” room for refreshments after (or instead! 😉).

Heating

22 Barend

The (Worcester Bosch) combi gas boiler is located just inside the downstairs twin bedroom to the right of the door. It provides hot water on demand and heating on schedule. The temperature is controlled with a thermostat on the wall next to the kitchen in the dining area.

The maintenance team from Barend Holiday Lodges look after the heating temperatures and schedules. If you think it needs adjusting, please get in touch with reception so that they can make the change for you, and so that they know what has been done.

We’ve had superfast full fibre Internet installed at the lodge.

The speed of the Internet and WiFi is: 100Mbps, “Perfect for box-sets & streaming”.

WiFi

The WiFi network and password are on the welcome note left in the lodge. You should also be able to scan the QR code on there to join automatically. The WiFi details are also on the back of the router.

Mobile Signal

With EE we get 4G signal everywhere in the lodge. The speed of data varies greatly depending on where you are in the lodge and time of day. Speed has ranged (download/upload) from 2.39Mbps / 1.08Mbps – pretty slow 😩 – to 18.4 Mbps / 2.02 Mbps – OK.
