Whether you’re looking for a quiet week on the coast or an active break in the Galloway countryside, Serenity 22 is perfectly placed. From the lodge doorstep at Barend, you have immediate access to the loch and woodland walks, while the beach at Sandyhills is just a short stroll away.

We’ve put together this guide based on our own visits to the area, covering everything from our favourite coastal hikes to the best spots for tea and cake.

9-Hole Golf Course

4 miles W ~8 min drive DG5 4QS

A golf ball and iron club on the green at Craigieknowes Golf Club, an informal 9-hole course located an 8-minute drive from Serenity 22 Barend.

Enjoy a free round at Craigieknowes Golf Club. It’s an informal, scenic par 30 course that’s great for both beginners and seasoned players.

About 10 mins walk

Large, sandy and warmed by the gulf stream, popular for paddling and exploring rock pools.

Excellent for walkers at low tide, check ‘good to know’ for tides info.

The Barend Food Scene

4 minute stroll from your door! | DG5 4NU

Head down to the old farm buildings near reception for a changing line-up of local street food and mobile bars.

Inside, there’s of seating, along with toilet facilities. Outside, there’s a large heated canopy covering the seating area – making it a great spot for food and drinks even on cooler evenings, which we almost never get in Scotland 😜

With different vendors visiting regularly, there’s always something new on the menu.

A picturesque little village popular for sailing. Can be part of a longer hike or take a short walk along the track to the next village.

There’s lots to see and do at Threave, including unique gardens and glasshouses, a Scottish baronial house, easy and more strenuous walks (Threave Castle is part of the wider estate), diverse wildlife including an osprey platform and bat reserve, and food and drink at the cafe!


Caerlaverock Castle

26 miles NE ~45 min drive DG1 4RU

As you can see from the image, Caerlaverock is an unusually shaped – triangular – castle!

It a great day out, with plenty to explore around the castle ruins and visitor centre.

We love this place – a haven for waterbirds in summer, and has views of the rolling Galloway Hills. Great walking and stargazing in this area too!

⚠️ Sadly the excellent Visitor Centre / Café and toilets are currently closed. The loch is still worth a visit if you’re in the area.


Culzean Castle

67 miles NW ~1 hr 50 mins drive KA19 8LE

This is obviously further to travel. It’s worth it though because Culzean is the flagship property of the NTS…

A cliff-top masterpiece, opulent to the extreme, it rises above woods, beaches, secret follies and play parks and is filled to the turrets with treasures that tell the stories of the people who lived there.
